Last weekend, the picturesque city of Penticton, located in the stunning Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, played host to the highly anticipated 2023 Granfondo cycling race. This exhilarating event attracted hundreds of cyclists from all over the world, testing their endurance and skill on the challenging routes. However, amidst the intensity of the race, the Okanagan Valley College of Massage Therapy (OVCMT) students showcased their expertise and dedication by offering their services to treat and support the participating cyclists.

OVCMT students seized this opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge and practical skills in a real-world setting. Under the supervision of experienced RMT’s.

Cycling is a demanding sport that puts tremendous strain on the body. As cyclists pushed themselves to their limits, the scorching heat added an additional challenge to the  race. Students provided essential on-site massage therapy services, while also remaining vigilant about signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Each cyclist had unique needs and concerns, which the OVCMT students addressed with utmost care. Before commencing the massage therapy sessions, the students conducted assessments to understand the specific requirements of each athlete. By considering factors such as muscle tightness, fatigue, and any pre-existing conditions, they tailored their treatments to provide optimal outcomes for this grueling race.

The presence of the Okanagan Valley College of Massage Therapy students at the 2023 Granfondo was much appreciated.  Their skillful hands and compassionate hearts played a pivotal role in ensuring the well-being of the competing cyclists. Participating in the Granfondo  allowed the OVCMT students to showcase their resilience and adaptability. This real-world exposure allowed them to apply their skills in a high-pressure environment and gain confidence.  The experience further solidified their passion for massage therapy and the vital role they can play in supporting athletes during demanding events. Well done OV!
