The Okanagan Valley is truly a breathtaking place, especially on a sunny day like today. As the fabulous weather beckons, a group of dedicated students from the Okanagan Valley College of Massage Therapy are making their way to the beach, using this opportune moment to combine leisure with study in this picturesque setting. Meanwhile, some of their peers are diligently preparing for their shifts in the Student Clinic. During the summer months, our clinical programs experience a high influx of patients, many of whom have been actively engaging in outdoor activities under the warm Okanagan sun. This is where the expertise of both massage therapy students and  their Registered Massage Therapist clinical supervisors truly shine, as they possess a unique perspective when it comes to observing the effects of sun exposure on patients.

Massage practitioners have the privilege of closely examining the body's surface as they work on muscles, fascia, ligaments, and joints. Through their trained eyes, they recognize that the skin, which serves as the body's protective barrier against harm and external elements, is vulnerable to damage from excessive sun exposure, potentially leading to skin cancer in severe cases. With their close proximity to patients, massage therapists are well-positioned to identify areas of concern, such as unusual moles or other abnormalities, and promptly inform patients when further investigation is necessary. Many massage therapists have made life-saving referrals, urging patients to consult with their doctors, resulting in the early detection and treatment of skin cancer. Patients greatly value this vigilance and the proactive care provided by their therapists.

While massage therapists may not be dermatological experts, their training equips them with the ability to spot irregularities and advise patients to seek additional medical attention, thereby preventing the progression of potentially serious conditions. Therefore, during the scorching summers in the Okanagan, therapists strongly advocate for the use of sunscreen as an essential protective layer for those who venture outdoors for work or play. As the saying goes, "slip on a shirt, slap on a hat, and slop on some sunscreen" before stepping out into the sun. Additionally, it is always prudent to consult a healthcare professional if any changes in the skin are noticed.
