As an RMT who has been working since 2003, I am always proud to share which college I graduated from. Before coming to OVCMT, I lived on the coast. It only made sense for me to go to one of the other MT colleges closer to where I lived, however, I chose to visit and interview each of the colleges, as well as talk with students and RMTs before deciding. I kept hearing how OVCMT was the optimal choice, how it was run by people of the highest integrity who have others’ best interests at heart, but nothing could prepare me for how OVCMT exceeded my level of expectation! All who personally know the hearts behind OVCMT have been touched by their optimistic, compassionate, caring, and uplifting ways.
In making my decision to come to OVCMT, living away from the rat race in such a pristine haven as Okanagan Valley helped lower my stress level daily. And anything that lowers stress in the hectic life of a student is a valuable commodity, I should know as I was a single parent when I went through. As challenging as the schooling is, coming out the other end could be likened to the birth process: you may feel like the pressures on you might never end and suddenly you are thrust out into the world, born into
the most beautiful profession where you love to go to ‘work’, but so well educated you are more than ready to stride out confidently and offer the gifts you have been given. The clients you see will likely end up bringing you more joy on a regular basis than you could imagine your services are bringing them-how self-satisfying! Knowing that you are making a difference though by helping people on their healing journeys, plights for wellness, rehab, and to be pain-free, what more honorable a profession could one imagine being a part of? The quality of care and the time we actually get to spend with clients often far exceeds the time their other health care practitioners get to spend with them, and because we are afforded the extra time, we have the unique opportunity to offer clients valuable insights on their health that might otherwise go unnoticed. This is an enormous gift to clients, and gives us the realization of the importance of our role in their lives and well-being. We can even branch into doing research for the profession as well, where we can share valuable findings to help other therapists with their clients; there are endless opportunities for professional growth within the field.
My whole OVCMT experience has helped inspire my compassion and approach in practice as well as in the rest of my life: what a true blessing for me and all who know me that I was a part of this school.
All the best,
Laura Meikle, RMT
