OVCMT students work on their technique in class
Selecting the right massage therapy college and training program is an important process. You want to make sure that the school you choose fosters a friendly learning environment, while challenging you to develop the skills you’ll need for success in the field.
One of the best ways to research a prospective college is to speak with its current students.
We surveyed several of OVCMT’s first and second year students to find out what inspires them to pursue a career in massage therapy, what they find most rewarding about the program, and what they plan to do after graduation.

In response to this question, many OVCMT students revealed that they were inspired to pursue a career in massage therapy for both practical and personal reasons. Lesa Madsen told us, 'I’ve always wanted to help people and wanted to work in a healthcare profession, but I didn’t want to go to school for seven years.'
Marlaina Meinzinger said that what most influenced her decision to enrol in massage therapy training was 'the freedom to work and live where I want, an interest in healthcare, and a good income.'
Like so many of our students, Wendy Wiebe was motivated by a persistent desire for a meaningful career-change. She told us: 'I wanted to enroll in this school 15 years ago and have never forgotten. Life just didn’t allow for it at the time.'
OVCMT students come from all walks from life, but no matter their background most are drawn to massage therapy training to help others lead healthier lives, for the portability of the career, and the relatively short length of the program.
OVCMT challenges students with a rigorous curriculum and hands-on training program. Our high standards help to advance both the profession of massage therapy and the individual careers of our graduates. At times, students feel concerned about keeping up with their course load, but our patient and caring instructors find ways to support their success.
'It’s hard at first, but it gets easier.' Lesa Madsen told us, 'I hit burn out a few times, but talking to a few of the teachers helped put me back on the right path.'
Students agree that the coursework is demanding, but doable. One student points out, 'if an average student like me can do it, so can you!'
When asked about the learning environment at OVCMT, students emphasized how much they love our teachers. Lesa Madsen says that the classroom environment at OVCMT is 'relaxed and focused… teachers are good at using different learning techniques.'
Other students characterize our classrooms as 'very supportive. Instructors are always willing to help and want to see you succeed.'
Overwhelmingly, OVCMT students say that the supportive environment and wonderful teachers are what they love most about our massage college - and that this support makes tackling challenging classes far less daunting.
Students at OVCMT get practical massage therapist training at our on-campus clinic. They graduate with clinical experience and a solid foundation in practice management on top of their classroom knowledge.
Marlaina Meinzinger reports that 'working with patients has been the most valuable experience during school.'
'It may seem scary at first,' a student told us, 'but when you are massaging it is so peaceful and the patients really appreciate the amount of care the school and students provide.'
Learning to build professional confidence and relationships with patients is what the OVCMT clinical experience is all about. Hands-on experience provides context to classroom theory and helps students hit the ground running after graduation.
Our students have different career goals in massage therapy. Wendy says, 'I simply want to go back to my community and offer my work so people don’t have to drive to Kamloops.'
Other students want to work with a specific demographic, like infants or the elderly. One student told us, 'I love running so I may focus on sport injuries', leveraging the flexibility of the career to match her own interests. Whether they’re planning to stay put or take their skills on the road, OVCMT students are excited to explore the various professional options that lie ahead.
