Educational Training Objectives

Massage Therapy Program

  • To ensure an understanding of the benefits and limitations of massage therapy.
  • To present a course that is broad enough in scope to provide a sound academic foundation integrated with a strong practical application of massage therapy skills, ethics, communication, research, professionalism and community competencies.
  • To qualify each graduate to work successfully as a Registered Massage Therapist in conjunction with other allied health professionals and to give each graduate the opportunity to meet the entry requirements of a fourth year BHSc.
  • To provide an orientation to basic business management so that the graduate may operate a successful massage therapy business either in a “self-employed”, “employer”, or “employee” capacity.
  • To provide a program which meets and/or exceeds the requirements of the College of Massage Therapists of BC and the Private Career Training Institution Agency of BC.
  • To provide the students with the ability to:
  • diagnose musculoskeletal pathologies and to treat a variety of conditions and injuries that are deemed responsive to Massage Therapy, utilizing a process oriented approach and current techniques,
  • utilize evidenced based and best practice principles, and
  • educate clients in the cultivation of wellness.
  • To help students engage in a transformational learning process and to provide an educational environment that acknowledges the process of learning as equally important as the desired end results.

Relaxation/Spa Practitioner Program

  • To ensure an understanding of the benefits and limitations of wellness massage and spa application.
  • To present a course that is wide enough in scope to provide a general academic foundation integrated with practical application of business, communication, ethics, professionalism and wellness massage and spa skills.
  • To provide a program which meets or exceeds the requirements of the Private Career Training Institution Agency of BC and reflects the current trends of the wellness massage/spa industry.
  • To help students engage in a transformational learning process and to provide an educational environment that acknowledges the process of learning as equally important as the desired end results.
  • To prepare each student to practice in the spa environment with a high level of safety and client centred care.
